Breaking the Silence: Financial Abuse and the Path to Empowerment
Description: Studies show that financial abuse happens in 94-99% of abusive intimate partner relationships, yet it is the least understood form of abuse. Part One of this workshop will identify the numerous tactics that fall into various categories of financial abuse including coerced debt and financial fraud. The presenters will discuss the many ways financial abuse impacts a woman while she is in the abusive relationship as well as the long-lasting effects it can have after leaving the abusive relationship. The presenters will also explore ways advocates, attorneys, and other professionals can help support a survivor of financial abuse. In Part Two, presenters will discuss program models and case management interventions to support survivors in recovering from the impact of financial abuse. The day will close with experiential learning through scenario exploration.
