SUMMARY:Genesis Lunch & Learn: Safety Planning in IPV
DESCRIPTION:  \nBring your lunch & join us every 4th Thursday \nDescription: Safety planning is an essential part of working with victims of domestic violence. Safety planning begins with helping clients identify what they are already doing to minimize the risk of harm. We recognize that a victim cannot stop the abusive partner from abusing her. However\, when we can equip her with safety planning ideas\, she can feel more confident and competent in navigating her specific situation in a way that hopefully decreases the likelihood of the escalation of violence. \nThis workshop will guide participants through the process of safety planning with victims of intimate partner violence. We will explore the danger signs of physical safety\, identifying what factors can increase a victim’s danger level. Participants will also gain awareness of the emotional safety needs of victims of domestic violence. Finally\, participants will practice safety planning through client scenarios. \nSpeakers:\n \nRuth Guerreiro\, LCSW-S\nChief Clinical Officer\nGenesis Women’s Shelter & Support \nJordyn Lawson\, MA\, LPC-S\nChief Residential Officer\nGenesis Women’s Shelter & Support \nCEUs: 1.5 for LPC\, SW\, LMFT \nLOCATION:\nGenesis Women’s Shelter & Support\nNational Training Center ● 2023 Lucas Drive\, Dallas\, TX 75219\nOr join us for the simultaneous webinar on Zoom by registering HERE \nIf you can’t join us for the live event\, you can contact training@genesisshelter.org after 4/24/25 to receive a copy of the recording. SUMMARY:DV 101 Series: Realtors
DESCRIPTION:Description: Do you know how to recognize the signs of domestic violence? It’s more common than you think\, and it doesn’t always look the way you’d expect. Realtors frequently interact with clients in their homes\, where signs of abuse may be present\, and they may unknowingly become involved in high-risk situations. Maybe you’ve wondered if a friend\, family member\, or client is in an abusive relationship but weren’t sure how to help. Or perhaps you’re questioning whether certain behaviors in your own life could be signs of domestic violence.  \nThis training\, led by experts from Genesis Women’s Shelter & Support\, will equip real estate professionals with the knowledge and tools to recognize signs of abuse\, provide resources to victims\, and ensure their own safety when working in potentially dangerous situations. You’ll walk away empowered to recognize the warning signs\, offer support\, and connect those in need to the right resources. \nSpeakers: Genesis Women’s Shelter & Support Staff \nJoin us online or in person!\nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Genesis Lunch & Learn: Why Women Choose the Bear
DESCRIPTION:  \nBring your lunch & join us every 4th Thursday \nDescription: In celebration of Women’s History Month\, this presentation will recognize the significant impact women have made in addressing women’s equality but also the violence that continues to be perpetrated against them. The observance not only honors women’s achievements but also highlights the ongoing need for gender equality and the continued fight for women’s rights. This presentation will also share the dangers for women hiding behind and within Executive Orders\, legislation and the vile expressions that broadly contribute to a national resurgence of misogyny and reduction of women’s rights. \nParticipants will become familiar with the history of The Women’s Rights Movement as well as today’s threats to eliminate those rights for which our mothers and grandmothers fought so hard. We will examine the impact of Project 2025 on today’s women and gender equality. Attendees will discuss the novel and popular TV series\, The Handmaid’s Tale and learn of the slippery slope towards the gradual elimination of gender equality. The presenter will also share a study from the University of Debrecen\, Hungary which examines the small steps leading to the elimination of gender equality\, describing the Four D’s: Distinction\, Dependence\, Division and Dominance. The goal of this presentation is to better understand the work we have ahead of us to ensure that rights for women are not lost\, stolen or given away. \nSpeaker:\n \nJan Langbein\nCEO\nGenesis Women’s Shelter & Support \nCEUs: 1.5 for LPC\, SW\, LMFT \nLOCATION:\nGenesis Women’s Shelter & Support\nNational Training Center ● 2023 Lucas Drive\, Dallas\, TX 75219\nOr join us for the simultaneous webinar on Zoom by registering HERE \nIf you can’t join us for the live event\, you can contact training@genesisshelter.org after 3/27/25 to receive a copy of the recording. SUMMARY:Surviving Strangulation: Preventing Injustice & Overcoming Defenses
DESCRIPTION:  \nAlthough dangerous and sometimes deadly\, victims of strangulation frequently lack obvious signs of external injury\, often leaving marks on the abuser as they fight for their life. Assaults or homicides that involve asphyxiation are particularly susceptible to being misunderstood by practitioners and manipulated by offenders. This creates unique challenges for investigators and prosecutors who often rely on external signs to identify a criminal assault or homicide. When this happens\, survivors can be criminalized\, predators avoid accountability\, and we miss valuable opportunities to prevent further harm. \nIn some cases\, experiencing a strangulation triggers a victim to kill the abuser. Without proper understanding of strangulation\, evidence to justify the victims use of self-defense is often hidden in the homicide. This talk will also allow audience members to understand a variety of situations where victims of strangulation may use violence as a survival technique\, as a strategy to minimize the severity of abuses\, or to simply save their own life. \nIn a sexual assault that involves strangulation\, practitioners often overlook the subtle but significant evidence that can corroborate the victims resistance or explain their compliance. Improved understanding can assist practitioners to successfully overcome the “rough sex” defense. \nBy gaining a deeper understanding of the nuances of strangulation and its implications for survivors\, participants will be better equipped to respond effectively to cases intimate partner abuse\, sexual assault\, and human trafficking. This training provides practitioners a new lens to see behavior and injuries through the perspective of a survivor and offers better context to commonly misunderstood evidence.  By exploring the legal and psychological implications of survival\, practitioners will be better equipped to navigate these difficult cases. \nSpeaker: Kelsey McKay\, Attorney & Consultant \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:In Children’s Best Interest: Applying a Perpetrator Pattern-Based Approach to Domestic Violence Cases in Family Court
DESCRIPTION:Family courts are charged with balancing off child safety with meaningful relationships with both parents. What does this mean in the context of domestic violence? In many instances\, courts are not clearly presented with the perpetrators’ patterns and the specifics of the harm it has caused\, and emphasis on collaborative parenting can work against the best interests of children in these cases. Drawing on work in family court settings in the United States\, United Kingdom and Australia\, David Mandel\, CEO and Founder of the Safe & Together Institute\, will explore how the Safe & Together Model can help legal practitioners and others in family court matters. This workshop will look at the difference between risk and harm frameworks; the importance of understanding post separation coercive control and the targeting of professionals and systems as part of the perpetrators’ patterns; how to best understand and contextualize protective parenting behaviors; the centrality of a behavioral approach to objectivity and neutrality; and how to increase accountability for perpetrators as parents in the family court context. David will also explore themes like the “The Myth of Parental Alienation” from his recent book “Stop Blaming Mothers and Ignoring Fathers: How to transform the way we keep children safe from domestic violence.” \nSpeaker: David Mandel\, CEO\, Founder & Owner \nOrganization/Agency: Texas Bar Foundation/Safe & Together Institute \nCEUs: MCLE 5.5 credit hours \nFamily Violence CJE 5.5 credit hours (Pending Application) \nREGISTER HERE\n*Limited to 50 attendees*

SUMMARY:Law Enforcement Tools and Strategies to Strengthen Relationships with Immigrant Communities
DESCRIPTION:Language access and the U and T visa programs are important tools that strengthen victim\, community\, and officer safety. With over 200 languages and dialects spoken in the United States\, law enforcement agencies face ongoing challenges investigating crimes involving victims\, suspects\, and witnesses with limited ability to communicate effectively in English. Cultural barriers and immigration status can create vulnerabilities for victims of domestic violence\, sexual assault\, stalking\, dating violence\, child abuse\, and human trafficking. Often\, these victims do not access law enforcement or community resources due to fear that reporting will lead to deportation or separation from their children. This training will provide attendees with information about U and T visas and the use of qualified interpreters to build trust between immigrant\, refugee\, and limited English proficient victims and community-based organizations. This interactive event will present promising practices for effectively using interpreters\, leveraging bilingual officers\, identifying technology to support interactions with victims\, and implementing tools to strengthen victim safety\, ensure perpetrator accountability\, and improve community trust. \nSpeaker: Cannon Han\, Senior Program Manager \nLeslye Orloff\, Adjunct Professor and Director \nMichael Wilmore-Crumrine\, Sergeant \nOrganization/Agency: Office on Violence Against Women\, National Violence Against Women Law Enforcement Training and Technical Assistance Consortium (LETTAC) \nCEUs: Pending \nREGISTER HERE\nLimited to 50 attendees
