This presentation will also share the dangers for women hiding behind and within Executive Orders\, legislation and the vile expressions that broadly contribute to a national resurgence of misogyny and reduction of women’s rights. \nParticipants will become familiar with the history of The Women’s Rights Movement as well as today’s threats to eliminate those rights for which our mothers and grandmothers fought so hard. We will examine the impact of Project 2025 on today’s women and gender equality. Attendees will discuss the novel and popular TV series\, The Handmaid’s Tale and learn of the slippery slope towards the gradual elimination of gender equality. The presenter will also share a study from the University of Debrecen\, Hungary which examines the small steps leading to the elimination of gender equality\, describing the Four D’s: Distinction\, Dependence\, Division and Dominance. Participants will learn how IPV survivors prioritize their SRH needs and what recommendations IPV survivors have for improving services. Keeping victims safe and holding offenders accountable requires that diverse professionals – including (but not limited to) victim advocates\, law enforcement\, prosecutors\, educators\, and others – view their work through a “stalking lens\,” take pro-active steps to incorporate a stalking response into their roles\, and work together in multidisciplinary teams. This full-day session explores the dynamics of stalking\, focusing on the highly contextual nature of the crime by discussing common tactics used by perpetrators\, stalking’s co-occurrence with domestic and sexual violence\, the use of risk assessments in stalking cases\, the use of technology to stalk\, investigation strategies\, as well as tools to plan for victim safety and increase offender accountability. SUMMARY:Surviving Strangulation: Preventing Injustice & Overcoming Defenses
DESCRIPTION:  \nAlthough dangerous and sometimes deadly\, victims of strangulation frequently lack obvious signs of external injury\, often leaving marks on the abuser as they fight for their life. Assaults or homicides that involve asphyxiation are particularly susceptible to being misunderstood by practitioners and manipulated by offenders. This creates unique challenges for investigators and prosecutors who often rely on external signs to identify a criminal assault or homicide. When this happens\, survivors can be criminalized\, predators avoid accountability\, and we miss valuable opportunities to prevent further harm. \nIn some cases\, experiencing a strangulation triggers a victim to kill the abuser. Without proper understanding of strangulation\, evidence to justify the victims use of self-defense is often hidden in the homicide. This talk will also allow audience members to understand a variety of situations where victims of strangulation may use violence as a survival technique\, as a strategy to minimize the severity of abuses\, or to simply save their own life. \nIn a sexual assault that involves strangulation\, practitioners often overlook the subtle but significant evidence that can corroborate the victims resistance or explain their compliance. Improved understanding can assist practitioners to successfully overcome the “rough sex” defense. \nBy gaining a deeper understanding of the nuances of strangulation and its implications for survivors\, participants will be better equipped to respond effectively to cases intimate partner abuse\, sexual assault\, and human trafficking. The interviews are utilized by law enforcement and the prosecution in building and strengthening criminal cases against suspects of these crimes. DESCRIPTION:Family courts are charged with balancing off child safety with meaningful relationships with both parents. What does this mean in the context of domestic violence? In many instances\, courts are not clearly presented with the perpetrators’ patterns and the specifics of the harm it has caused\, and emphasis on collaborative parenting can work against the best interests of children in these cases. Drawing on work in family court settings in the United States\, United Kingdom and Australia\, David Mandel\, CEO and Founder of the Safe & Together Institute\, will explore how the Safe & Together Model can help legal practitioners and others in family court matters. This workshop will look at the difference between risk and harm frameworks; the importance of understanding post separation coercive control and the targeting of professionals and systems as part of the perpetrators’ patterns; how to best understand and contextualize protective parenting behaviors; the centrality of a behavioral approach to objectivity and neutrality; and how to increase accountability for perpetrators as parents in the family court context. He is a retired Chief of Police from Burlington\, VT\, and the former Commissioner of the Vermont Department of Public Safety. Tom is now a national and international advisor and trainer for police\, prosecutors\, advocates\, higher education\, the military\, and government/private sector. DESCRIPTION:Language access and the U and T visa programs are important tools that strengthen victim\, community\, and officer safety. With over 200 languages and dialects spoken in the United States\, law enforcement agencies face ongoing challenges investigating crimes involving victims\, suspects\, and witnesses with limited ability to communicate effectively in English. Cultural barriers and immigration status can create vulnerabilities for victims of domestic violence\, sexual assault\, stalking\, dating violence\, child abuse\, and human trafficking. Often\, these victims do not access law enforcement or community resources due to fear that reporting will lead to deportation or separation from their children. This training will provide attendees with information about U and T visas and the use of qualified interpreters to build trust between immigrant\, refugee\, and limited English proficient victims and community-based organizations.
